Iceland, which belongs to Northern Europe, is a country with a very cold climate. Spread over an area of about 103,000 square kilometers, this state has a small population of approximately 369,000. Therefore, Iceland remains among the least densely populated countries in the world. Iceland’s natural topography has led to a large decrease in population.

These are volcanoes, sand dunes, hot springs, lava deposits, glaciers, etc. Tourists from all over the world come to Iceland to see the gifts of nature. Some places in the country have become more popular among tourists. This article presents you with 5 mind-blowing tourist events that are a must-see for travelers to Iceland.

1). Vatnayokull Glacier

The 2500-year-old Vatnajökull is considered the largest glacier not only in Iceland but also in Europe. Spread over an area of 8100 square kilometers, this large glacier covers nearly 8% of Iceland’s total area. The average thickness of the ice in this glacier is about 400 meters, and its maximum thickness is recorded as 1000 meters. There are about 30 other small glaciers in the Vatnayokull glacier. The largest glacier is Breedemarkkurjökull. Havandalshnakur, Iceland’s highest peak, is also located within the Vatnajökull glacier.

In 1934, the lake region of the Vatnayokull glacier erupted. Therefore, research work was done in connection with this glacier. In 1996, 1998, 2004, and 2011, more eruptions occurred in the lake region. Since the establishment of the Icelandic Glacier Science Society in 1950, research has been conducted on this glacier almost every year. It was possible to know information about the operation of the glacier.

There are seven active volcanoes under the Vatnayokull Glacier. Among them, Grmsvåtn, Bardarbunga and Kverkfjøl volcanoes take a major place. Due to the periodic eruptions of these volcanoes, glaciers melt and floods occur. In the year 1362, a huge flood was created due to such an eruption that happened in connection with the Vatnayokull glacier. Similarly, in the year 1727, such a big flood occurred. In those cases, there was a lot of property damage.

2). Kerkuffel Falls

Located at a height of 463 meters, Kerkuffel Mountain is also known as Palli Kanda. It is a must-visit place for tourists visiting Iceland. That’s because it’s a great place to see the Northern Lights during the winter. The wonderful tourist event which attracts more tourists during the winter season is also full of tourists in other seasons. It is to see the beauty of the terrain surrounding the Kerkufel mountain. One of the most beautiful places in the area is Kerkufel Falls.

This waterfall, which is created by the Kerkeufel river, has three parts. Tourists going to visit the falls can travel nearby by vehicle. After that, you can go to the foot of the falls after walking along a footpath. Summer is the best time to visit this waterfall.

At that time, the heat of the surrounding environment increases, so the tourists who go there have the opportunity to bathe in the cool water pool at the foot of the falls. It is a wonderful experience for local and foreign tourists visiting Kerkufel Falls.

3). Diamond Beach

Between Hoff and Hoffn, which is located on the southeast coast of Iceland, there is a beach called Breedamkursandur. As a result of volcanic eruptions, the sands of that beach have turned black. Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon is located near the Breidamerkursandur beach. Large chunks of ice break off from the Breedermarkkurjökull glacier, which feeds the lagoon, and wash up on the Breedermarkkursandur shore.

The big chunks of ice drifting like this accumulate on the black sand of the beautiful Breedemarkkursandur beach. Because of the generally cold climate in Iceland, the ice pieces do not melt easily.

Therefore, the pieces of ice collected on the shores of Breidamerkursandur remain as they are. This beach is called “Diamond Beach” because the ice cubes on the black sand beach look like diamonds.

Diamond Beach can be visited in any season of the year. When winter comes to Iceland, there is less light during the day. Also, the environment is very cold. Therefore, tourists visiting Diamond Beach in winter have to face challenging conditions. When summer comes to Iceland, there are long days. Then the temperature of the environment takes a value between 8-14 Celsius.

Therefore, tourists who come here in summer can spend the day happily by engaging in various activities around the beach.

4). Rauferholschelir lava tunnel

Volcanoes are found around Iceland. Due to the eruption of those volcanoes from time to time, considerable damage has been done. About 5,000 years ago, a volcanic eruption occurred in Iceland’s Blafell mountain range. Along with that, it is mentioned in the old records that the lava flowed in a big way.

A wonderful lava tunnel has been created in the Rauferholschelir area due to the hardening and solidification of the lava that flowed in this way. There you can see how a crust roof has been created by the lava. At 4,461 feet long, this tunnel is one of the longest lava tunnels in Iceland.

Most tourists come to visit this lava tunnel located in southwest Iceland. There is a special guided tour for them. There, tourists are escorted safely into the tunnel and taken to various events there. Tourists are at risk of various accidents while visiting this tunnel.

In case of such accidents, necessary first aid is provided here. Generally, the tunnel can be visited at any time of the year. But in winter, tourists should wear boots that can walk on snow and ice. Otherwise, there is a risk of accidents.

5). Yokurcerlan Lagoon

The largest glacier within Vatnajökull, Bridamarkurjökull, feeds the Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon. With a depth of 284 meters, this glacier lagoon is the deepest reservoir in Iceland. The water of Yokullserlen, a beautiful glacier lagoon, has a brighter blue color than other lakes.

Due to the beauty of this lagoon, 4 movies were shot here. Those are the four Hollywood movies A View to a Kill, Die Another Day, Lara Croft: Tomb Raider, Batman Begins. Also, the filming of the TV series Amazing Race took place here.

Glacier caves are located in the vicinity of this glacier lagoon. Bird species that are accustomed to the cold climate also live in the vicinity of this lagoon. A large number of tourists come here because of the beauty of this glacier lagoon. It is a common sight to see tourists coming to the lagoon having a good time here.

There is a special tour organized for tourists visiting Yokurserlan lagoon. During the trip, you will have the opportunity to see the wonderful views of the glacial rivers, waterfalls, etc. Another important place in Iceland is Yokursarlan Lagoon. Therefore, it should be said here that the face of a stamp issued in 1991 included Yokulsarlan Lake.
