64

The rural area of Uckermark is located just 80 kilometres north of Berlin and is known as the green lung of the German capital thanks to its many forests and lakes. Therefore, it is the ideal place to locate Das Glashaus, a country house designed for weekends designed by architect Sigurd Larsen that merges completely with nature thanks to its glass roof and has been built with honest materials such as brick and wood.

The house, originally designed for a small family with many guests that is also rented, has been designed with a simple curved wall that creates privacy and a distribution in which all rooms face the large covered terrace. However, one of the most striking things about the house is the structure of wood, glass and transparent plastic of the roof on its upper floor. Thanks to this, a large and bright space is created that works as a studio and from which to enjoy the views and daylight. The roof on the west side has been designed in glass, so that the entire green valley and the sunset can be seen perfectly from the inside. However, the eastern part of the roof is made of polycarbonate, which creates a spectacular play of light, shadows and changing colors as the sun moves creating a new experience every day.

In addition, inside, a bed, a work table and a bathtub turn the greenhouse into a spectacular space to be lived throughout the year. Even in winter, it is a perfect place to retreat and watch the scenery and light change through the windows. Thanks to the incidence of the sun, it can be heated without the need for energy on days of good weather. On the lower floor of the house, the staircase and kitchen block are integrated into solid volumes of concrete bricks while the bedroom beds have been placed along the façade so that they can be accessed both from inside and from the terrace. In addition, when the long row of glass doors is open, the bedrooms and shower merge seamlessly with the terrace of the house. A house in which nature has become another room.
