1). Genghis Khan Statue Complex


Emperor Genghis Khan ruled Mongolia during 1206-1227 AD. Although his original name was Temujin, he later adopted the name Genghis Khan. Genghis Khan, who was known as a very skilled warrior, conquered the surrounding countries and strengthened the Mongol Empire. Therefore, his name is written in golden letters in the country’s history.

As a result, a giant statue of him standing on a horse was created in 2008 to honor Genghis Khan. Located 54 kilometers from Ulaanbaatar, the capital city of Mongolia, the statue complex has become a popular tourist destination.


The statue is 40 meters tall and has been constructed using around 250 tons of stainless steel. According to the reports, about 4 million dollars were spent to build this statue. It is also special that several statues of Genghis Khan’s soldiers standing on seats have been created on the ground below this unique statue.

Hustai National Park, located 100 kilometers from the capital city of Ulaanbaatar, is another beautiful tourist attraction in Mongolia. Established in 1992, this park covers an area of 50,620 hectares. Considered to be the largest park in Mongolia, the rare Taki wild horses live here.

They are currently recognized as the only wild horse species living in the world. Also, 217 species of birds, 44 species of mammals and 16 species of fish live in Hustai National Park.

In the distant past, certain groups of people lived in the area where this park is located. Therefore, many old ruins are found here. These include the ruins of shrines, rectangular tombs and monuments. Tourists usually visit this park between May and September.

Located 360 kilometers southwest of the capital Ulaanbaatar, the land area is spread over 121,967 hectares.

The Orkhon river that flows near this valley feeds the surrounding land areas. From the 6th century, various kingdoms existed in the vicinity of this valley. Among them, Genghis Khan’s kingdom that existed here in the 13th century is special. The ruins of the city of Karakoram, which was its capital, can still be seen here today.

Inhabited since prehistoric times, the valley was home to ethnic groups such as the Huns, Uyghurs, Khitans, Turks and Mongols. Mongolia is a Buddhist country. Even today, about 51% Buddhists live there. Since Buddhism was popular in the country even in the distant past, there are still many Buddhist monasteries around the Orkon Valley.

Erdene Zuu, Tuvkhun Hermitage and Shank Western are some of them. In 2004, UNESCO recognized the historical value of the Orkhon Valley and named it a World Heritage Site. It is with the aim of preserving the ancient ruins in this valley for future generations.

 

4). The Gobi Desert


A large desert is located near Mongolia, a country with strange topographical features. The desert known as Gobi is spread over an area of 1,295,000 square kilometers. In this desert, where there is a big temperature difference in each season, there have been cases where the temperature dropped to minus 40 Celsius in winter.
